It's been an interesting month in the p4d lab. Two major computer failures in one week. One fried PC and a failed macboook screen.
Here's the first of a few projects I'm going to have to rebuild thanks to losing my PC.

If you've ever visited my main portfolio website, www.p4design.org then you've probably heard the site's soundtrack which was mostly composed by the UK producer Formula. (prev. 'unknown')

The following are some logo concepts I put down for my man in London.
the unknown logos are pre-crash, and the formula ones post-crash.

I started an internship this week. I'll be working with strutta.com for the next month collaborating on a few projects. this is my first internship, and I should have some interesting new projects to share in the next few weeks.

A couple weeks back I did a promo event for Virgin Radio's launch/VIP party.
Pretty standard event for me, I painted outside for a few hours letting guests view the process of me painting this Virgin logo. I was given free reign beyond the logo element, so this was pretty fun to paint.
The contract came together very last minute, but it worked out alright in the end.

Right now the Housepaint art exhibit (click HERE for previous post) I was invovled with this past summer has been installed in the ROM (Royal Ontario Museum)

If street art is found within the walls of a museum, can we still find something in this vibrant international art movement that can be respected as critical and exceptional art? This exhibition, driven by the street artists themselves, is a distillation of the spontaneity, spirit of collaboration, accessibility and social consciousness from which street art has emerged. Housepaint at the Institute for Contemporary Culture (ICC) at the ROM is the first exhibition of street art in a major Canadian museum, an open-ended exhibition and experiment. Through the run of the exhibition, every month-and-a-half another street artist will be invited to respond and add to the canvas houses from Tent City and the previous art work in the sequence -- layering the exhibition with meaning and building organic connections between the works.

At the end of the exhbition the canvas houses will be auctioned for Habitat for Humanity Toronto. Please register at http://www.housepaint.ca for programming updates.

I happen to have two panels in this installation(unofficially), so I am very excited and proud to have my work showing in one of the largest galleries in Canada alongside these amazing artists. P4D_Dojang-Signage

This week I produced the following signage for Dojang Martial Arts studio located at 4465 dunbar St. (Map)

I really enjoyed painting this sign, I've always had a thing for the old signage and billboards of the past. I cant help but stare when I see a 50 year old coca cola billboard fading into old bricks, and I'll be very happy if one day when I'm old and weathered(more so) that I can happen upon one of my forgotten wall murals that has stood the test of time and faded only from exposure to the elements since its creation.

I've got a lot of painting left in me, hopefully my work can keep up ;)

Next post should be some process work from an exciting new project I'll be starting next week. A 7 foot by 11 foot canvas, privately commissioned by a design studio located in Toronto. I posted some concepts for it in the last weeks, but since then the design totally changed and we finally arrived at something everyone was excited about. The words "powerfull" and "Holy Shit!" were used in response to my submissions, so obviously this is going to be a fun one to work on.

this one was a 24"x90" tryptich(a tryptich is a single image made up from three images together) with the word "avatud" (estonian for 'open')

Been working on a pile of commissions this month..thought zI'd post up some of the conceptual drawings for the sake of feeding your eyes.

These first batch are all for one proposal. My art Direction was to only use red, white and black. The piece will be hanging in the entrance to a design studio

The best 4 of these were chosen for submission, and then from there I developed this concept based on the feedback received. (the addition of a grey blue was also added to my pallete)

and then I have also been developing this canvas tryptich for another client in Vancouver.

The text is an Estonian word "Avatud"

and then a final piece "Mojo" for the same Vancouver client.

coming up next on the p4 blog will be my work on Vancouvers pilot project between BC Hydro and the city, that invovled me painting a BC Hydro power box (Padamount)
as well I have 4 PVC toys being customized for the show coming up next month.

Oh and I've also got a line of shirts coming out very soon!

Horus-VS-TheRocker

So about a year ago I got paid a few dollars to release image rights for a graffiti wall I did as part of some random community 'clean up the alley's' day..
At the time "the Rocker was going to be starring Donny Wahlburg, but it appears they went a different direction by the time it was released....
Heres my piece, and some screens from the movie..

In the movie they walk out of this club and towards the end of the alley where my piece is..you can see some of the other guys stuff in the shots but its pretty dark until they stop for this one on one scene right in front of my piece.

Since this was legal graffiti, the studio was obligated to pay for image rights..had this been some random illegal vandalism, I would have no intellectual property rights...that being said it was nice to get paid for something I already did, rather than just seeing it in the movie after the fact.

BC's_150th_Birthday_Celebration_inVictoria

This Past weekend I got to visit Victoria and parts of Vancouver Island while working for Brandlive marketing on another Volkswagon promo event.
(p4blog post on previous VW event here)
For BC's 150th birthday, the Capital of Victoria held a 3 day festival on the harbourfront featuring concerts and all kinds of cultural performances.

I was on site creating one of a kind spray painted tshirts which were up for grabs in exchange for a 10 dollar suggested donation for Alzheimers research, so that was a nice twist on a media installation.

I got flown to the island on this single prop seaplane..

the view was spectacular..

seen here are shots of the booth and some t-shirts made over the weekend.

Over the weekend I also got to paint with some friends on this wall off the island highway.

I cant wait to go back!

For this update I thought I'd share some sketches from my books over the last month. With a trip to BC that left me computer less for two weeks I had a lot of time to work on paper.

this is a sketch that I worked on during my Bus trip from Toronto to Vancouver, over three days. For the keen of eye, there are actually several words and messages hidden in this abstract piece..I dont remember everything I wrote in it, but I do remember the words "prairie dog" are in there somewhere.

This was drawn during the latter part of my bus ride through northern ontario. I have always loved the oxidized canadian shield that the TCH is carved through. I was also inspired by the amount of fir trees along the roads as I travelled, and was reminded of many a group of seven painting which i never really appreciated until then.

As it turned out, I finished this sketch up just as the shield and trees began to give way to rolling hills and open plains, entering the prairies the next morning..

this is another bus sketch..

a funny bird I drew one day in my planner whilst killing time somewhere. Kinda looks like a Nick DiGenova type thing...

a little horus freestyle sketchy, I think I drew this on the subway one day, again in my planner..

So, thats the sketches update. It's always good to get away from the laptop and re-tune your hand skills.

This past weekend was Beats, bgreaksand Graffiti, the battle. Held at harbourfront centre on July 5th and 6th. This event was organized By Horus and the Manifesto staff, including Steve Ferrara of wellandgood.ca
Toronto has seen yearly graffiti expo's and demo's for years now, but this event was unique in offering a cash prize.

Here's photos from the reception at Sleep is for Dead People, held last week at Whippersnapper Gallery. this year the reception was held a few days after the actual 24 hour event, to allow the curators and artists to regain their composure after sleep deprivation..while I was glad to sleep after the show, I did think there was a charm to forcing the artists to actually be sociable on no sleep right away, but then again, I'm funny like that.

overall I thought this year (the third semi-annual) turned out the best work, even though I think I had more fun the past two years.

Katharine Black birthday

Did a birthday party for some 13 year olds today, super fun times, The kids seemed to really enjoy it.
I came and quickly sketched out the birthday girls name, then let all her friends colour in the canvas, and finally I came back and touched up the work, pretty easy gig, and Katharine loved the canvas..

Here's two concept designs for the upcoming show at whippersnapper gallery on Thursday and Friday April 17th and 18th. this will be my third year participating in the Sleep is for Dead People exhibition.

-Two pieces based on these designs will be on display, and for sale at Whippersnapper Gallery at the official opening reception April 24th, but this Thursday/Friday is the live painting segment, during which visitors and distractions are welcome, as 20 artists including myself paint on various projects over a 24 hour period....

This year I'm taking it easy on the gallery, and NOT painting on their walls. Past guests will remember me as the mural artist whose 24 hour works covered 8 or ten feet of physical wall space, here's me working on the past two installations..

While I did enjoy painting such large pieces in the past, the cleanup was a nightmare. and standing all day and night was physically pretty rough on me, this year Im going to take it easy, get a comfy chair, and relax it up...

For this canvas, I tried out a new style of bevel canvas that is built with a 45 degree bevel frame, so it looks very unique and will stand off a wall, giving it a 3d effect. I was really stoked to work on this as Ive been a spidey fan for years, and drawn my share of the webslinger...

in a slightly related theme, I was asked by a user on a forum, if I was interested in giving a shot at colouring a comic book sketch page, just for fun. So having never done one, and totally being down for the challenege, heres my first photoshop coloured comic book page.

Here's a little canvas replication commission I did for a friend.
It is drawn from the famous Josephine Baker portrait by Paul Colin.

Painted with acrylic on a 12" square canvas stretched with dyed canvas. (canvas material is dyed to a colour, not the typical white that normally is available)
I really like how this turned out. the smooth sensual line-work of the illustration plays nicely with the roughish texture of this canvas treatment, and I took extra care to make the paint application as smooth as possible to look more like a print, than a painting.

So I finally got back into Circa to add more Handstyle graffiti work to the newly installed glass section dividers. These new dividers will create a bit more privacy between the sectional couches, where the bar offers bottle service to limited guests. From what i gather, since this area is basically for the dj/band entourages, it can be hard to gain access...so I guess its like exclusive and stuff, which is cool, right.?!

and a couple of quick videos showing the beginning process of this graffiti application.
-Note the complete nonchalantness, as I attack these pristine glass panels with permanent ink markers in the most expensive club in Canada. Days like this are sexy.

Here's a bunch of photos from the Rise charity art auction last week. The event was pretty successful. I don't know if we reached the $10 G's mark we were aiming for, but almost everything got bid on. My piece finally sold for $150, after 7 individual bids. The piece was valued at $350, so someone went home with a super deal, and the money went to sketch (www.sketch.ca) which is great program I am happy to support and have worked with over the last few years on several events.

RISE is a fundraising art and music event aimed to raise ten thousand dollars for SKETCH. Many of the continent's most respected artists have donated their work to be auctioned off opening night. Music will be provided by Toronto residents DJs Dopey and Serious and by special guest DJ Platurn from Oakland, California. Admission is free, however a cash donation of your choice is recommended.

Sketch creates art making opportunities for young people who are street-involved and homeless or who are considered to be at risk. Sketch provides a safe place for these youth to create art and to learn skills such as screen print making, wood working and music production to further help them gain employment and build the confidence they need.

Circa's bathroom has a full bar, and dj booth..complete with projections, and two stand-up glass showers...oh, and its unisex

This is the south hall, leading to the bathroom, and back towards the coat check. These "Milk-Maids" were inspired by clockwork orange, and the detailing was awesome.

Some of the tables in the "Fathom Lounge" had various projections from the ceiling..this one was my favorite.

Circa Grand Opening Part 2...the DJ Lounge...

the following are images of the DJ lounge which as it turned out, is one of the busier areas of the club. I think this is because the DJ Lounge has a good view of the DJ booth, and is darker than the other areas of the club which tended to be well lit.
I could barely get any good photo's of my work, there were so many people packed into that space.

The black light picks up the white well, but I think it will really stand out when the vinyl gets applied sometime this week

The club was packed with at least 2000 people, considering this was an invite only event, thats a lot of invitations.
Truly, if you knew anything about clubs in North America, Circa was the place to be....

I havent really been able to show the club now because of a confidentiality clause, but the club opens tonight, so its finally OK for me to leak these images.

The area I've been working on is called the "DJ Lounge"
this is what it looked like when I got there:

basically the space is 4 sets of couches, with one set, located directly behind the dj booth, for whichever world famous dj and his entourage to chill all VIP styles.

I started by painting the 80 feet of walls with a two tone blue, to dark blue fade, and began applying tags in a line across the entire space. the art director was looking for that feeling of seeing tags on the freeway as you whip past them

eventually the tags got built up to create a kind of abstract texture

All in all, I spent about 4 full days tagging this wall, with markers, spray paint, and brushes.

This is how the walls are looking right now with the blacklights installed

next week, i will be adding a die cut vinyl layer overtop the white tag/texture...
this is a closeup of the test vinyl, applied to clear plexiglass (shown against a wall so you can see it)

this is the full vinyl design, which when printed will be about 9 feet long by 2 feet high

and finally a photoshopped rendering of how the vinyl will look when applied to the tag texture

(Note the light blue undershadow..this will be printed in white, so it picks up the light from the blacklights behind the couches)

There will eventually be glass walls dividing the set of three couches outside the vip booth, and they will also have the vinyl design, etched into the glass...

Circa will be the largest club in North America when it opens and is another project by club guru Peter Gatien (Limelight, Tunnel, Palladium) the 53,000 sq. ft, four-four complex is really eight clubs in one and will also be outfitted with a full apartment and recording studio.

Sunday September 23rd 2007 was the final day of ManifesTO's inaugural event.

The event started at 8am for me. On arrival I set about to getting the graffiti wall in place. Using event fencing systems from Modulok, we secured 19 canvas in a row to create a 70 foot wall for the selected local artists to paint.
By noon all the artists had begun painting, and unfortunately I came to realize my camera's batteries were dead-so unfortunately I wasn't able to capture the painting process, although photos will be available soon.
(I'll make an official post when the press images form the event become available.)

I've been working on some designs for a club opening soon....Im not supposed to show anything from inside until it opens, but for now, here are some images of concepts that aren't getting used.

Wow, it's really turned out to be a crazy summer for freelance gigs, lots of projects under the belt, and more on the way... this update is just a taste.

Here's some pics from the opening reception at Ukula last night

This Saturday I will be painting a set of Flats for Canadian Wrestling Revolution ( a pilot being shot for Amp'd tv) at the CBC building.

exhibit. this show will compliment the underpressure graffiti festival taking place August 11-13. The show will highlight the works of prolific Toronto graffiti writers' work on canvas. The show is being held at Le Kopshop

On august 18th I will be showing a canvas at Ukula as part of a group show, for the month. For this event I've decided to show "the girl" since she was cut out of the exhibit at Whippersnapper for space. just a quick update. The Sex Sells pieces are staying on exhibit at whippersnapper gallery for the rest of the month.

here's a progress shot of a new work...this is an experimental op-art piece. the colour vibrations of the red and blues make your eyes go haywire, and once the piece is done I plan on showing it with 3d glasses as part of the installation...the effect is.... intense!
I would eventually like to show a series of these op-art pieces, and make everyone at the opening wear 3d glasses all night.

This weekend was spent painting a graffiti ad/mural for Bacardi. On friday 30 artists responded to an open call, and competed for the 8 contract positions. On saturday and sunday the 8 finalist artists painted the following work in spraypaint.
There will be a timelapse video produced from the event, (watch for updates here, and on my youtube page)

the mural will be visible for 4 weeks, and then will be replaced by some other advertising. If you live in the Toronto area, you can find this wall at the SE corner of John and Adelaide.

This is the only creative/marketing input we were given. It was our responsibilty to incorp[orate as much of this design, specifically the logo and splashing liquid...other than that, the artists had a fairly open canvas to work with. We were also asked to incorporate the "alicve with taste" slogan, but as seen below, we managed to make that very stylized.

Whippersnapper-the wrap up

Here's some pics from the show at whippersnapper this past weekend.
It was a bit of a weird group of artists. With a large portion of the show dedicated to youth/community arts groups, it felt a little disconnected. My work was edited down from the 5 pieces I hoped to have hang- for space reasons, which is always disapointing, but as far as things go, I couldn't complain, since there were other artists who also only had a small showing.

I would have liked to show more of this new collection, and as it stood, it was really hard to get a feeling for the aesthetic in the work, which sadly, is kind of the point...oh well.. C' est La vie..

I'll be participating in a group show at whippersnapper gallery this month.

Opening reception Saturday July 14th.

reception will start at 7 pm, and likely go until about 10 or 11pm.

I'm pretty excited about this show, since it will be the unveiling of my new series titled
"Sex Sells"
which features pinup and portraits of women. the work is very illustration based, which I suppose is a reflection of my work as an illustrator for the last few years. With these pieces however I am attempting to merge a variety of influences into a stylish hybrid collection.

Taking influence from tattoo art, graffiti, and pinup illustration; I think this is a series that will surprise many of my collectors and fans.
(Ha! look at me, with 'collectors' and' fans'... :P )

A little change of pace for this blog update. No pictures, just talk.
-(Sorry, it's kind of a lot of talk...I fell into grant writer mode, but I still think its interesting to read, so enjoy, ignore, or quote it if you like- just get the name right ;)

Tonight I participated in a live discussion on MTV Canada. The program was looking at street art as a culture, and had myself along with some select members of the toronto graffiti scene offering our personal inisights as to what drives us, and what kind of things we are all doing now..ie. how has graffiti affected our lives.
As with live TV, there was very little time to speak, so I thought for this blog update I would go deeper into some of the ideas I touched on in the show.

The discussion started with Duro3 and Spud talking about why they do graffiti, and how important illegal graffiti was to the artform. - the act of tagging is a vital part of the graffiti experience that every artist must pass, in order to really 'get' the energy of the artform. There is a quickness and rebellious attitude to the style, that comes from its taboo. Even though I do legal murals now I dont believe you can really ever capture that energy without having felt the adrenaline rush that comes with doing something youre not supposed to.

The discussion then turned towards myself, who-as a writer who has in the past done illegal work, and also worked with the City of Toronto on various public arts events over the last 5 years.

I began as a pretty typical writer. I lived in the suburbs, and did some really crappy work in municipal sewer type tunnels, and backs of wharehouses and maybe a school or two-sorry:(
Around 1996 I moved to Toronto, and really began my career as a writer. I followed the typical course, did some tags, did some trains, did some pieces, got arrested.
Out of getting arrested I had to serve a community service by participating in one of the city's "Graffiti Transformation Projects". This process showed me how an artist could access the walls in the community, without having to break the law, and in a lot of cases even get paid for what I was doing for free anyways(actually, painting a 'free wall" always cost me for materials).

When the opportunity came up for me to host a graffiti festival in 2003, My only thoughts were to finally have a chance to participate in the bigger picture of the local culture. I brought my skills learned working within the community and my love for graffiti as a participant, together to benefit both worlds. I was able to address the needs of the artists, the cutlure, and the community. At the time I didnt really think that holding a graffiti festival would result in me being publicly outed as a vandal, and eventually lead to my retirement from illegal street art.
Moving from "illegal street artist" to "urban artist" or whatever I am now... It was one of those things that I couldnt see happening at the time, but I cant regret, because it has gotten me to a point now where I can still pursue my passion and know that I also have a vested interest in its success outside my own goals.

In the process of planning a public event, I chose to work within the system to access resources that would allow me to contribute to the greater good of the culture, and that will always be my biggest contribution to the artform, and one that I take pride in.

The next speaker was JRone, an artist whos street work was very prevalent when I was just getting into the local culture, and whos handstyles were influential in forming my style today. He presented some video and talked about how he was developing graffiti into new forms of expression using technology, while still staying true to the guerilla style of exposure that embodies graffitis soul. Using digital applicationss such as Adobe After Effects, and hardware that included an ipod and a projector, JRone was filming an animation of his tag, and then re-projecting it on buildings.

There is currently a lot of development in graffiti using technology, because the artform istelf is built around evolution.
-There is a heirachy, that starts with a tag, which can be covered by a throw-up (bubble letters), then a full colour piece, and eventually a large mural....(artists reputations and fame also come into play as well) So it is only natural that graffiti has now evolved beyond spraycan art to include video and animation, fashion, fine art, sculpture, postering, stencil art, etc.

I've said it many times... Once you open your eyes to see graffiti as the rich visual experience it is, and learn to read the letters and handstyles (tags) - a person can never really shut off that visual stimulation. The world around you explodes into a vibrant landscape.
Logo's and advertising are known to affect us subliminaly, and it is the same effect when you begin to decode the artform that is graffiti. Behind every piece single of graffiti from big to small, there is a story, about a person, in a place, at a specific time, for a specific reason...

Here's some progress shots of me painting a style exchange a few weeks back. My friend Tobin drew a horus piece for me to paint, and I, in turn drew a "Star" piece for him to paint...althouh Im still waiting to see his results...

thanks go out to bboy Jedi and MasiaOne for rescuing "thicket" from Gypsy Coop, which was sold and shut down almost a year ago, with two of my pieces still in it. I've been watching in the windows waiting for someone to be around so I could reclaim the pieces, since the owners were nowhere to be found. the image in the top left corner shows just how dusted up this piece was before I cleaned it up.

Also, check out the interior design mural I did as a private commission last summer (finally got back for pictures) it's a bit subtle to make out, but basically I surrounded this apt with 2 colours of tech striping, in a glossy almost transparent ice blue, and complimented it with a more solid grey blue. I hope to be able to do more interior mural work like this in the future, (hint hint..yes I'm taking orders :P )

Here's a preview of my upcoming collection of work. Drawing from(pun intended) my illustration background I have recently begun painting various styles of protrait and pinup art. The original inspiration was workign towards an art show this fall at Oni tatoo shop, although two other shows are now also looking like they might happen as well, including a show in Montreal late in august(recently confirmed at le KOPSHOP)
